The Fred Hays Turner papers, 1877-1920.

Contains: diaries pertaining to military life in the Philippines (1899-1908). Consisted primarily of a scrapbook containing: diary of activites at the French front near Soissons (1918); correspondence (1906-1916); numerous photographs of Turner's military service in the Philippines (1899-1911), Texas (1911-1912), and Europe (1916-1919), group portraits of the 23rd Infantry Regiment (n.d.) and 3rd Division (1918); picture post cards and brochures of France especially the Rhine River (1918); commission and promotion certificates (1901-1921); newspaper clippings pertaining to Turner's military career (1917-1920); miscellaneous issues of TWENTY-THIRD INFANTRY LANTAKA and THE TWENTY-THIRD INFANTRY BOLO (1907-1909); and typescript of Turner's LITTLE THINGS IN A BIG PROFESSION (1914).

Born in 1877 in Putnam County, Indiana. Enlisted in the 40th U.S. Volunteer Infantry in 1899 and served in the Philippines until July 1901. While in Manila, Turner took the examination for a commission and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 23rd Infantry Regiment. Served with the 23rd Infantry Regiment in the Philippines in Jolo and Mindanao and promoted to 1st Lieutenant.
